Feast of the Assumption — 15 August

On August 15, the Feast of the Assumption, also known simply as “The Assumption,” is widely-celebrated all over the world. This holy day commemorates when the Virgin Mary ascends to  heaven at the end of her life.

Defined as dogma in 1950 by Pope Pius XII, the Catholic Church, both Eastern and Oriental Orthodoxies and sects of Anglicanism all accept this day. The devoted light candles, attend masses and say prayers for peace all over the world.  Although there are Christian denominations that respect Mary as the mother of Jesus, she is not uniformly acknowledged or worshipped with the same fervor throughout Christiandom.

Assumption celebrations are accompanied by festivals, colorful street processions, fireworks and pageantry. While a “feast” isn’t actually required, there is a longstanding tradition of blessing the summer harvest.  There are even special “Assumption” recipes incorporated into family dinners.  Sounds heavenly!
